Senior Software Engineer Promotion

Last week I received notice of something I have been working towards during the last 2 years at Home Depot- I’ve been promoted to the position of Senior Software Engineer. This means that on top of doing the work I have already being doing, I’ll be given more challenges and responsibilities. From today, as a Senior Software Engineer I am responsible for joining a product team and contributing to the software design, software development, and overall product lifecycle for a product that Home Depot’s users love. The engineering process is highly collaborative. I am expected to pair on a daily basis as they work through user stories and support products as they evolve. In addition, I may be involved in product configuration, performance tuning and testing as well as production monitoring.

As a Sr. Software Engineer, I am able to operate independently, though typically will work as part of a team with varying skillsets to create, support, and deploy production applications.

Additionally, my major tasks, responsibilities, and key accountabilities are to collaborate and pairs with other product team members (UX, engineering, and product management) to create secure, reliable, scalable software solutions, work with Product Team to ensure user stories that are developer-ready, easy to understand, and testable, write custom code or scripts to automate infrastructure, monitoring services, and test cases, and to write custom code or scripts to do "destructive testing" to ensure adequate resiliency in production. Additionally, I am expected to configure commercial off the shelf solutions to align with evolving business needs and to create meaningful dashboards, logging, alerting, and responses to ensure that issues are captured and addressed proactively.

Less frequently I am expected to field questions from other product teams or support teams, monitor tools and participates in conversations to encourage collaboration across product teams, and to provide application support for software running in production. Furthermore, I am responsible to proactively monitor production Service Level Objectives for products, and likewise to proactively review the performance and capacity of all aspects of production: code, infrastructure, data, and message processing.

Finally, as a senior software engineer, I should participate in learning activities around modern software design and development core practices and to proactively view articles, tutorials, and videos to learn about new technologies and best practices being used within other technology organizations.

I am so excited for this opportunity, and want to thank my team members and manager including Sreeni, Chandra, Pavani, Venkat, Vijay, and Subbu for their support. I am so grateful to get to work with them day in and day out.

Cheers!
